You must use an experimental flag to activate Dark Mode in Google Docs on Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Enter “chrome://flags” into your browser’s URL bar, search for “dark mode,” and then check the Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents checkbox.

Enter the following into the address bar at the top of your Google Chrome browser: chrome://flags
- To find dark mode, use the search box at the top. “Dark mode.”
- Select Force Dark Mode for Web Contents from the drop-down menu by clicking “Enabled.”
- Chrome will request you to reload the browser in order for the changes to take effect. Check that there is no unsaved work in the browser, and then click “Relaunch.”
When you open the Google Docs website, you’ll see that the page color has changed to black and the text color has changed to white.
On Microsoft Edge, enable Dark Mode in Google Docs.
Google Chrome isn’t the only browser that lets you forcefully activate a dark mode. The dark mode flag will be supported by any browser built on Chromium, including Microsoft Edge.
